This mix is an old favourite.
For years I thought it was lost, until I found a copy in HJ’s stash of old CDs.
I’d made her listen to it given her a copy when we first started hanging out, and I’m glad she kept the CD because that CD ended up being the last remaining copy.
Good memories from this one:
- The last vinyl mix I made in New Zealand, recorded at the legendary Farrar St. flat[0]
- Features long blends and double-drops; one of the best and cleanest vinyl mixes I ever managed to record
- Starts off with the best remix Calibre ever did[1]
- Used it to audition with Youdai[2] for a 2004 gig in Beijing that would have me as the support DJ for Tony Colman / London Elektricity
- Got the gig, much success
- The double-drop of Basement Track and Soundtape provoked a vague thumbs-up and “nice mix” from a jetlagged and mostly-asleep Colman during a pre-gig hangout at Cloud 9[3][4]
- Played the support set at Tango[5]; great success
- Was invited to go B2B with Colman to finish the night; magnificent and unlooked-for success

Footnotes
[0] Farrar St. – what’s up Rene/Mieke/Moose/Lobes
[1] The best Calibre remix is Jaheim – Put That Woman First
[2] Youdai was one of Beijing’s nightlife impresarios, and the manager of …
[3] … Cloud 9 – Beijng’s top after-hours spot at the time, and the scene of much debauchery (especially it’s eventual closing party)
[4] Youdai: “You want to hang out with Tony Colman before the party?” Me: “Hell yes.”
[5] At “Big” Tango – part club, part live venue, part labyrinthine KTV lounge
